The result was a super nice looking home but with a roof life of perhaps 15 to 20 years, while only a small amount of additional cost could have yielded a roof with 30 to 50 years of life. Unhappy with the durability of the product many home owners have opted to replace their shake roof with 'shake like' asphalt composition roofing. In fact, many home owner associations have been obliged to alter their covenants to include Certainteed Presidential TL roofing or equivalent. This is a composition roof with a tri-layer of asphalt designed to mimick a shake look.
Of course western red cedar shake is not for everyone, but it is actually extremely durable, beautiful, and fits into the landscape better than just about anything else. But it must be taken care of with moss and debris removed regularly. Shake roofs average 30 to 50 years life.
